Grant History & Culture

Grant County’s communities are nestled alongside more than 3 million acres of the Gila Wilderness. With historic ties to mining, ranching and agriculture, Grant County’s communities have grown into modern towns with friendly people, growing businesses and a terrific year-round climate. Despite our small size – or perhaps because of it – Silver City and Grant County have developed an extremely broad assortment of community resources to meet our residents’ healthcare, educational, informational and social needs. There are a large, well-staffed regional medical center and numerous healthcare providers and clinics. The community is also a community of churches and other congregations, totaling more than 50 places of worship in our county.

Silver City’s vibrant arts community draws rave reviews from around the globe, and counted among author John Villani’s 100 Best Art Towns in America. Western New Mexico University is situated at the heart of Silver City and central to Grant County: with a range of associate, bachelor and graduate degree programs and non-degree study options.
